While learning the art of teaching at Pratt Institute, I discovered a method that I now describe as trickery. The individuals I taught weren't as interested in learning as I had hoped, they were however interested in themselves. Through getting to know the kids I taught I discovered what they liked, what they were interested in. I manipulated the curriculm to fit into what they knew to help them make their own discoveries, creating more meaning in the long run. Learning through discovery doesn't feel like the traditional rote memorization 'learning'.

Rote learning works for a certain group of learning types and turns off others. My classes had little to do with memorization and mostly with self expression. I found when the students uncovered the next step in their progress they felt they owned it, they kept it for their own.
